China Southern Airlines’ Baggage Service Experience Promoted Nationwide

March 3, 2022 - Can baggage“talk”or“walk”? Can passengers travel completely free of worry that their baggage will make it their final destination with them? China Southern Airlines' revolutionary baggage“door-to-door”service is now available at 21 domestic airports.

On March 1, the Civil Aviation Administration of China organized a meeting at Beijing Daxing International Airport to summarize the development of baggage tracking systems for airports with a handling capacity of more than 10 million passengers and to push forward the construction of such systems for small and medium-sized airports .

As an airline representative, China Southern shared the practical experience and development thinking behind its new baggage tracking service - how to make baggage “talk” and “walk”- with more than 300 industry partners from across the country including airlines and airports, providing a valuable reference for China's civil aviation industry to promote the construction of such baggage tracking systems at small and medium-sized airport.

In 2018, under the guidance of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, China Southern took the lead in piloting the display service of key links in the whole process of baggage tracking in China, and quickly marketed it to various airports.

Passengers' baggage transportation information has now become“knowable, visible and controllable”, allowing the status of the baggage to be delivered to passengers in a real-time manner.

In 2020, China Southern was awarded the IATA Resolution 753 Baggage Tracking Whole Network Compliance Certification, becoming the first airline in Asia and the third in the world to obtain this certification. This marks that China Southern's full-process baggage tracking has reached the international advanced level.

Since 2020, China Southern has been exploring how to extend baggage tracking outside the terminal. With the support of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, China Southern has worked closely with various airports and third-party logistics providers.

In July 2021, the Company launched the“door-to-door”baggage delivery service, the first of its kind, at six airports (Guangzhou, Beijing Daxing, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Chongqing, and Chengdu) . When passengers leave from their home, they do not need to take their baggage with them as their luggage will be automatically picked up and then delivered to the designated destination.

With the “door-to-door”baggage delivery service available, China Southern has not only improved the quality of its baggage services, but also brought new ideas of innovation in baggage service in China's civil aviation industry.

Airlines can take advantage of the baggage information sharing platform and service network to improve their baggage transportation supporting system which will further diversify the service mode of baggage transportation and bring more efficient and convenient baggage service to passengers.
